Tommy John is passing along to those close to him that he is feeling tremendously ill these days and that he wanted to post a letter to the New York Yankees data thanking those that contributed to his career including Dr. Frank Jobe that extended his career through the way.
Tommy John became known famous after the success of Tommy John surgery in 1974. He played 26 seasons as a standout pitcher for the New York Yankees, Chicago White Sox, Anaheim Angels, Los Angeles Dodgers, Cleveland Guardians, and West Sacramento Athletics.
Long-time Yankee Bucky Dent has spent considerable time with Tommy John lately and paid his heart to the former Yank.
He pitched a long time, and had a surgery named after him,” Dent said. “He’s a guy that went out there and did the job. … My heart goes out to him.”
One of the more touching nuances in John’s letter was when he posted about his father.
“‘The day I left for my first job as a pitcher,” John wrote in his letter, “my father looked at me and said, ‘Good luck, Tommy. Just remember one thing: whether you make it in the big leagues or you don’t, you’ll always just be Tommy John from Terre Haute, Indiana.
