Matthew Schaefer is a Typical New York Islander
The New York Islanders have dealt with waves of leaders over the years that include John Taveras and Brock Nelson to name a couple.
Matthew Schaefer is the consensus No.1 pick on the clock for the New York Islanders and isn’t it ironic that Long Island has a cool accent first of all.
Secondly, the top college radio school in the country I attended for a period of time and die hard fans next to others in the northeast specific area of hockey.
Nelson was a good soldier but the Islanders recently dealt him and figured he did not match to expectations. Nelson, much like Taveras, however, stood to carry the logs of this team and city together as one.
Enter Matthew Schaefer who suffered a broken clavicle injury and series of mono in the fall. Is this the talented star but supposed risk and setback that comes with signing Schaefer and skilled talent aforementioned in New York?
Schaefer might be one of the best defenseman to come out since Cale Makar but I do not believe that because he will have to work on more to be just the best for this wonderful sports entity that is the New York Islanders.

Alexander Ovechkin Passes Wayne Gretzky with No. 895
Alexander Ovechkin does not get praised enough because he has not finished or accomplished what Wayne Gretzky has attained. Ovechkin has faced mighty feats whether winning the 2018 Stanley Cup or joining Gordie Howie and Wayne Gretzky with 800 career goals.
Something crazy took place Sunday afternoon, and I mean spectacular. He surpassed all-time NHL great Wayne Gretzky with 895 goals off a goal to Ilya Sorokin of the New York Islanders in UBS Arena and the crowd went wild. His teammates partied and huddled around him and afterwards Gary Bettman and Wayne Gretzky came down the aisle to congratulate Mr. Ovechkin.
It was a self-serving event as one’s got to wonder left all the accomplishments that do remain for Ovechkin as he is not far from over from being one of the greatest of all time.

Edmonton Hangover
The 4 Nations play comes to a close as now the Edmonton Oilers find themselves in a bit of a hole. That has begun with captain of Edmonton, Conor McDavid. He has only accrued one power play assist in the last two games. Not so Conor McDavid after his pickup win over USA.
He said the following, “We haven’t been very good. Just getting back to work. Sometimes this happens after breaks. Some teams come up flying. Some teams come up flat. We have obviously done the latter. So yeah, gotta get back to it.”
Even though he was not Team Canada captain, Sidney Crosby, I respect his leadership but not his accountability. This has been the eying problem of McDavid from time to time especially against the Philadelphia Flyers, to no fault are in a rebuilding phase and look great with rookie Matvei Michkov and John Tortorella trying to prove on his resume he can take a seed and rise to the occasion.
All that aside, they did also play Alexander Ovechkin and the defense cannot allow errors in the marginal column when it enters the postseason. It is highly touted with Darnell Nurse and Evan Bouchard.
Nurse is in fact the nephew of star quarterback Donovan McNabb and comes to the aid when necessary. Edmonton cannot afford to lose out because if they do, the Calgary Flames or Vancouver Canucks might creep up, and you do not want that, Edmonton, Canada.

The Aftermath of Team Canada’s win
Team Canada put on a. nail biter for the ages by defeating uSA just when it mattered. Players were posing after the game like they won the Stanley Cup Final and afterwards resolved who was the better competitor.
In the outcome, this rivalry will not ultimately go away for no specific reasons. It is a campfire waiting to ignite the spirits of those past, today, and tomorrow in the etches of hockey history.
USA suffered its defeat but they also discovered news Vincent Trocheck suffered a broken finger and will be out months. It has worried the doubters and critics of Rangers fans in New York and began sending cryptic updates.
As for the television ratings, the audience at home clocked in at a whopping 9.3 million viewers as compared to the Stanley Cup 2024 at 8.8 mil.
For whenever it comes next time, fans will be chanting their teams or reversing each side their country’s favorite uniform.

PWHL will Play in New Cities
The PWHL had tons of success and now they are taking the ‘takeover tour’ on the road to St. Louis, Vancouver, and Seattle. More destinations will be announced.
But games will mostly be played in NHL buildings and look to sellout like the one at Caesar’s Arena back in March 2024 of Pittsburgh and Detroit. Two interesting cities that are now leading the way for women and women’s sports abroad.

Sam Reinhart is on fire
It was Aleksander Barkov soaking in a four point win vs. Dallas in his hometown Finland. Then, there was the main star Sam Reinhart who added a goal and assist.
Reinhart has started the season hot with the league lead in goals and points. He has left off from last year.
Poised.
He has accumulated four power play points and scored 10 goals total tied with Nico Hischier and Cole Caulfield. He was named the first star of the week and who could blame.
Reinhart is on fire to start the season.
